Better Sites Than This
As far as I’m concerned, this page is a constant work in progress, but here are some of the sites I frequent. I’m always looking for things to add, new RSS feeds to check out, and new web genius, so if you’ve got something to share, send it along!
Personal Sites, News and Stories:
Two people, the most adorable child in history, and all of Chicago at their fingertips. Also – 90210! The good 90210.
Sarah, a fellow Okie and the author/creator/editor of Cringe, is one of my favorite internet peeps.
Seriously, you’re not already reading Heather’s chronicles of life in Utah with the dog that can balance things on its head?
Dooce’s husband, Jon Armstrong, is a kickass photographer, a geek extraordinaire, and gets as irritable about the Republicans as I do. Maybe more so.
The Typing Makes Me Sound Busy
My buddy from college, J-Money currently puts the entire rest of the internet to shame with the amount and quality of funny she cranks out.
It hasn’t been updated since 2002, but this is still one of the best and most frightening reads on the web.
Two websites by a married couple who are smarter and more hilarious and charming than I am in my wildest dreams.
Emily may be "One Demanding Girl," but her weblog’s addicting.
Dude, Jorge Garcia (Hurley from Lost) has a blog, and it’s awesome.
Sarah, another native Okie, is one of the coolest and most stylish women on the net. And boy, does she know hair.
Chaz was blogging before blogging was blogging, when it was still "Web Logging" or even just "having a webpage oh my god how novel!" And the fact that he’s a fellow OKC denizen just ups the appeal.
Ree found the love of her life, moved to the country, and started a website. She’s forgotten more about cooking than I will ever know, and her recipes have never, ever once steered me wrong. Also, I love the ongoing Harlequin-Romance story of how she met and fell in love with her husband, Marlboro Man. Add to that the fact that she’s a kick-ass, self-taught photographer, and, well, this website’s pretty hard to beat.
Another friend from college, Jon Warren might very well be the smartest person I know, and his theological treatises are compelling and thought-provoking.
Jon’s awesome wife Tish writes about food and theology, justice and fair trade, environmentalism and faith.
Neil’s a screenwriter in Los Angeles. His blog will make you laugh, sometimes uncomfortably, but will also make you smile with delight.
Girl Con Queso, one of the founders of Kirtsy, and Tish’s sister, is funny, stylish, and once went through labor in the middle of a hurricane.
Tracey’s a Gen-X mom who "believes in early afternoon cocktails, the greatness of Jon Stewart, and that being a smartass is a virtue."
Mixtape Jones (a.k.a. David B)
"This is a blog about me getting to know my record collection better, adding records to it, making mixtapes, and any other musical ephemera I choose to write about. I am a musician myself, as is my wife, so commentary/information about that will probably bleed over into this blog. Deal with it."
Speaking of people who know more about music/culture/awesomeness than I do, my buddy Lucas runs this awesome weblog which is where I find a whole lot of my cool.
Web-Remix Hilarity
Josh reads the comics so you don’t have to. Probably the funniest website on the entire internet right now, in part because of Fruhlinger’s merciless take on the funnies, and in part because of how ardently the readers get in on the act. I’ve been in the COTW 3 times but have never been THE COTW. So – something to shoot for.
While the Comics Curmudgeon calls the funnies out, GMG remixes one of the comics pages’ most ubiquitous fixtures, removing the fat orange cat from the equation entirely, leaving Jon Arbuckle alone to talk to himself and suffer breakdown after endless breakdown.
Listen, if you could do me a big favor and go read this site, that would be great. Kay? Thanks. Bye.
Tearing down the illusion that just because you have a computer and can afford software, you’re automatically a graphic designer.
Red State Blues
I love Salon, it’s probably my favorite site on the entire internet, and its political bloggers are hilarious, insightful, and often merciless.
Aside from Salon this is probably the internet’s greatest collection of analysis with just a hint of well-meaning liberal hysteria mixed in.
The web’s best place to track the polls. If you’re into that sort of thing and become deeply deeply mentally ill every 4 years like I do.
