Categories/Chapters

Series, Projects and Ongoing Okay City Features:

Vignettes. An ongoing project wherein I try to condense stories and important or memorable moments to a couple hundred words, at most.

Sam Fridays. I was worried this website would begin to contain entirely too many photos of my dog, and so I decided that all photos of Sam would go up on Friday, and, as much as possible, that I’d save my stories about him until those days as well. It’s your one-stop shop for all things Sam, so if you’re just on this website to look at my dog, that’s okay - I just made it that much easier.

Ten-Word Product Reviews. An ongoing project wherein I have only ten words to tell you what I think about some of the things you should or should not purchase.

Daily Photo. I try to take at least one *good* photo a day, which means that I have to take many, many photos, on average, every day.

The Centennial Project. Oklahoma, my home state, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its statehood on Nov. 16, 2007. I commemorated the event by writing six short essays about Oklahoma, its people, its history, and why I love it so much.

Summer Nights, I have a love-hate relationship with summertime, especially at around the beginning of August, which I generally find to be the most miserable, unenjoyable month of the entire year. So I wrote a series of essays about how to battle the late-summer blues.

The 365 Project.  I started the x365 project in October 2006. The idea is to write about one person a day who you have met, who has touched your life in some way, in the same number of words as years you are old. I started off with 26 words, and when I turned 27 I added one. I got all the way through, and it wasn’t easy.

These Are The Other Things I Write About, Listed Alphabetically:

Blessed Bafflement, because I am a religious believer, and I see sacred things happen every day, and every day I feel completely baffled - sometimes in a good way, sometimes not - by the presence of the sacred around us.

Casablog, wherein I write about the new house we bought, including the garden and all the repairs and redecorations we are constantly doing to it.

dreams, because night time is the right time - for my brain to make up some truly bizarre stuff.

Fambly, because I live close to my biological family, and because the family that I have built out of assorted ragamuffins is what keeps the cheese from really sliding off my cracker.

Füd wherein I write about how great a cook I am, new recipes I’ve tried, and wonderful restaurants and eating establishments I find and frequent.

The Good Fight, because I try to be a part of the solution. Even though I usually fail and injustice prevails.

Grind, wherein I write about everyday stuff.

Growing, wherein I talk about trying to grow my own food and keep my flowers alive. I grew up with backyard veggies and am slowly learning now to grow my own.

Heaux-Meaux, wherein I write about how very, very gay I can be.

Idiot Box, wherein I talk about the television, usually to make fun of it, take pictures of it, or to share things the networks seem to have a problem advertising.

I Have A Story, where I tell YOU all the stories I’m constantly telling people in person, because maybe if I get them out I’ll have time to find some new ones.

Ink, wherein I write about my tattoos as I dream them up and get them.

Interweb, because the Internet has magical powers, and also is stupid.

iPod, wherein I write about music, because music - well, it makes the people come together, don’t it?

It’s Not Right But It’s Okay, wherein I bitch about all that is wrong with people and sometimes get hypocritical.

library, because I love to read, and I think if you want to be a good writer, or really even just a good person, you have to be a reader first.

Mac, because I love Apple computers and products, and I cannot imagine ever buying any Windows products ever again.

Movies, wherein I write about the crap that they will put on film nowadays.

Nathansomnia, wherein I write because often, I am completely sleep deprived or up way past my bedtime.

North Carolina, because I went to college there, I lived there, and loved some parts of it, hated others, and still kinda miss it.

Oklahoma, because it is where I am from, where I live, and my favorite place in the world.

On The Road, because I love to travel and to write about traveling.

One Man’s Junk is another man’s treasure, and I find a lot of treasure that people threw out, pawned off, or no longer need, because they are dead.

Photos, because I take photos almost every single day, and I’d like you to look at them.

The Power of Two, wherein I write about the adventures in love I have with the man I love. Gayly.

Proof, wherein I try beers, wine and various and sundry other liquor to find out why Ben Franklin said it was proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Get it?

Sam, who is the bestest dog in the whole wide world.

Skew-Wul, wherein I write about school, as I was once a grad student and a teaching assistant in a journalism college, and for the greatest portion of my life I’ve been affiliated with universities in one way or another.

Soma, wherein I write about this troubling business of having a body and keeping it healthy, which is a challenge for me.

Sports, because I’m a guy, and I like sports. At the high school and college level, anyway; for the most part, pro athletes can bite me. I wish I got paid hundreds of millions of dollars to do something that most people do for fun, and then act petulant and claim to be underpaid.

Sweeeet, wherein I find things to make us all laugh. Anne Lamott said that laughter is carbonated holiness, after all, and some shit is fucking funny.

Writer, wherein I write about being a writer. How self-referential can you get?
