About Okay City

This website started in December 2004 at Blogger; back in those days it was titled The Unlikeliest Place, though I couldn’t really tell you why. I’d been reading blogs since 2001, and I’d attempted one at Live Journal in 2002 and another at Salon.com in 2003 - back in the days when they were into that sort of thing - but then they came along and wanted me to pay for the software to write it, and like Amy Winehouse, I said no, no, no.
This domain name was registered in February 2006 and has been hosted by Host Gator ever since. The specific server is in a building near downtown Dallas, Texas; I know this because I’ve seen it in person.
Back when I started this website I was starting a graduate program in writing at the University of Oklahoma. I was single, then I wasn’t, then I was again, and some of the old entries are for my eyes only now. My first public post is a cheesy little missive about how I’d learned to make white chocolate chip muffins. I like to think my writing has improved since then. This website started as a writing blog and has now branched out from that into photography, home repair, political asides and cooking. It just is what I want it to be, and I hope you like it.
This website is created with WordPress, and most of the photos are processed in some way through Photoshop or Aperture. There’s a guy here named Brian who drops in to make sure everything works, and to make everything look like what I want and to do what I tell it. He and I designed and wrote the WordPress theme that this site uses, and he wrote a wonderful interface that makes changing the look of the site and the contents of the sidebars a complete breeze.
I started hosting ads on this site in January 2008, and as of this writing I have made about $15 off them, and even that $15 is just imaginary money because I haven’t actually been paid a single dime.
If you like, you can read more about me, or see the answers to some frequently asked questions, or just get to reading, or, if you find this website tiresome and self-indulgent - which is a completely fair claim - you can click this link and get the hell out of here, and do some good in the process, hopefully.
