From Cisco Networking Simplified by Paul Della Maggiora and Jim Doherty (Cisco Press 2003):

"Desktop computers got faster, the number of computers grew, operating systems became multitasking (allowing multiple tasks to operate at the same time), and applications became more network-centric. All these advacements resulted in the congestion of LANs.

To address these issues, two device types emerged: repeaters and bridges."

I can't decide what is the most sad about this - the quote/book itself or the fact that I had to walk all the way across the office to find a book with more than 123 pages.

Also, for the record, Cisco Networking isn't simple. We keep the book on hand as a primer for the technically challenged.

Two things:

(1) I did this three years ago;

(2) My desk is no neater now than it was then, so the results might well be the same.
