You might drop the guy a sweet note hoping that his wife's health is improving, and saying if there's anything you can do to help them with the house, to please let you know. Say something like, "I'm sure you have your hands full, but you may not realize that whoever you hired to keep up the lawn hasn't been around for several weeks, and I didn't want you to risk getting a citation from the city or anything. Can I help find a new lawn service for you?" This way you can establish boundaries AND be caring and helpful. Can you get in touch with the owners?
