Distance: 5.02 km

Time: 33:02

Pace: 6:34 min/km (10:34 min/mi)

Calories: 425

This one was pretty intense, but a whole lot of fun. The guy on the next treadmill over was incredibly hot, and he was running a 7:30 mile (I often do math in my head while running). I felt the ridiculous need to try to keep up with him. I didn’t, of course, but I did push myself harder, which I suppose is good. The dip in the middle is me taking a tiny little breather once he left. Anyway, this pace was easy enough to keep up with that I’m going to try to bring my heart rate down on it, but I’m definitely not going to lessen the rate any. Also, the pain in my legs has all but gone; I think the trainer’s advice was wonderful.

    Nate,

What was your trainer’s advice to keep your legs from hurting. I am only running once a week because the pain in my legs is horrible.

The main thing he said was to make sure I was stretching enough. I thought I was, but he showed me some calf stretches I hadn’t been doing, and adding them to my pre-and-post-run stretch has really, really helped. I’m now stretching about 4 times more than what I had been.

Also, he said, and I’ve read in a bunch of places, that you need to replace your running shoes once a year. Apparently that’s how long it takes a good pair of shoes to wear out under the strain of constant running.

Finally he said that sometimes, running just hurts, and that you have to keep doing it anyway. He told me to ice the pain and take some ibuprofen and that as I got in better shape the pain would stop. I think there’s something to this; while this last run wasn’t pain-free, it was the most comfortable one yet, and I ran faster than I have in quite awhile.

Still, if the problem persists you should see a doctor or a P.T. My pain was on the inside of my lower legs, about 2-3 inches above the ankle. I was lucky it wasn’t shin splints.

    Always better to be safe.
